Cannes, France: The Cannes International Film Festival
When we think of the South of France, we often think of Cannes. And when we think of Cannes, we almost always think of the Cannes International Film Festival. At least, I do.
The Cannes Film Festival is the most prestigious film festival in the world and has had the most profound impact of any festival, on the landscape of film. Held annually at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres, the festival will take place from May 15 to May 26, 2013.
Every year, the festival draws huge crowds to this part of the world to either be a part of the festival or even just catch a glimpse. A committee appoints a jury head for each festival, and for the 2013 Film Fest, Steven Spielberg has been given the honor.
Spielberg, whose films have long been a part of the festival, is honored to be given this opportunity. Color Purple, Sugarland Express, and ET are just a few of his films that have graced the French film festival screens. Excited by his position Spielberg says:
"My admiration for the steadfast mission of the festival to champion the international language of movies is second to none. The most prestigious of its kind, the festival has always established the motion picture as a cross-cultural and generational medium.
The memory of my first Cannes film festival, nearly 31 years ago with the debut of ET, is still one of the most vibrant of my career. For over six decades, Cannes has served as a platform for extraordinary films to be discovered and introduced to the world for the first time. It is an honor and a privilege to preside over the jury of a festival that proves, again and again, that cinema is the language of the world."
The Cannes economy generally sees a boost during the festival and, I would imagine, hotel reservations are either very hard to find or very high in price. And if you are a resident of Cannes during this time, I'm sure you already know how busy it gets.
