Santa Monica Pier: World Famous Landmark Under Construction

When you think of Santa Monica, California, what do you think of? Well, I'll tell you what I think of. Beautiful sunny coastlines with happy palm trees, the 3rd Street Promenade (I know), and the Santa Monica Pier. I also think of healthy runners and happy people, but that's another blog.

The Santa Monica Pier will undergo construction to renovate this famous landmark, over the next year or so. The famed Santa Monica hotspot is over 100 years old, built in the early 1900s. With several updates having taken place over its lifetime, the current construction/renovation project is planned to extend its lifespan significantly.

According to the City of Santa Monica's official website, the Pier Renewal will involve:

• Construction of a 20-foot wide pedestrian trestle on the south side of the pier, beginning at the western edge of the Newcomb Pier and extending 175 feet west around the construction zone
• Installation of new concrete columns
• Removal of the existing timber columns, timber substructure, and installation of the new concrete substructure
• Installation of the new timber decking

These improvements are already taking place and scheduled to continue until the Spring of 2014. But don't fret, the pier will still be open for business along with all of it's restaurants, shops, and – of course – games and rides.

Will you visit the Santa Monica Pier during this construction period?  When was the last time you visited the pier? Let us know in the comment section below.
