Historic John Hudson Thomas Home in the Claremont District
The Kidd house was built in 1913 by famed architect John Hudson Thomas. The landscape surrounding 95 The Plaza is well defined, terraced and manicured with mature plantings. At the front of the home is a small court with defined block planters and landscaping. A path winds along the south side of the home until one encounters the buttressed porch. At this point a strong gable breaks through the roof, bringing light to the many windows that adorn the home’s exterior. The entry is enhanced by a deep sheltered portico and side sitting area. The homeowners have immaculately kept and meticulously maintained the interior and exterior aspects of the home, conserving many of its original details.
Upon entering the home, you are greeted by warm and beautiful wood trim and hardwood floors that envelop the first floor. Large, stylish curved windows fill the rooms on this level with light. Original wood and glass pocket doors lead to separate open living room and gracious dining rooms. The living room is accented by a large curved window and complemented by built-in seating, as well as bookshelves surrounding an over-scaled copper-hooded fireplace that commands focus. The dining room opens to an additional sitting/serving room with curved wood windows that offer majestic views of the surrounding landscapes. Curved French doors lead out of the dining room to the idyllic portico setting. A tastefully modernized kitchen with solid hardwood cabinets, Sub-Zero refrigerator and Viking range makes this floor of the house a chef’s delight. Through the kitchen is an additional family room with a beamed wood ceiling and a fireplace. Floor-to-ceiling windows illuminate the space and a pair of French doors provide access to the ample flat yard. A full bathroom and laundry are also conveniently located on the first floor.
The second story is accessed through a grand wide staircase that pierces up through the floor, and provides a landing where arched windows bathe a comfortable bench seat in warm sunlight. The master bedroom opens to an enclosed porch surrounded by windows. The master bedroom is accompanied by a tastefully renovated master bathroom with jetted tub and dual sinks. Three other plentiful bedrooms, an updated bathroom and bonus playroom round out the second floor. An attic pull-down ladder gives access to some of the home’s ample storage.
The bottom floor basement of the home has a bedroom, bathroom, garage and additional storage space.
