Walker, Wallace & Emerson Realty is the exclusive representative for Leverage Global Partners in the Carolina Foothills, including the Western North Carolina towns and surrounding communities of Tryon, Columbus, Saluda, Mill Spring, Rutherfordton, Spindale, Forest City and Lake Lure as well as the Upstate South Carolina towns and surrounding communities of Landrum, Campobello, Gowensville and Lake Bowen.

Tryon, NC, is considered one of the major equi-centers of the United States, with a broad and deep history of equestrian culture and sport. The area enjoys four seasons of amazing weather, warmed in the winter and cooled in the summer by the unique weather phenomenon known as the “thermal effect.”

The rolling Carolina Foothills, situated at the edge of the dramatically beautiful Blue Ridge Escarpment, grew in popularity as a resort area after the railway came through in 1917. Tryon quickly became known as a place where moneyed northerners could enjoy riding horses and playing golf during the winter months and coastal southerners could come to enjoy cooler temperatures during the summers. Soon there was a Tryon Riding and Hunt Club, an annual steeplechase and a horse show. The U.S. Equestrian Team held the selection trials for the 1956 Stockholm Olympics here. Today the area boasts two hunts, a number of neighborhood trail associations, a carriage club, a hunter/jumper association, and a pony club, as well as two local competition venues (FENCE and Harmon Field). Attracted by the natural beauty, wide open land and equestrian history of the "thermal belt," the Tryon Resort opened in 2014, offering “the most significant, new equestrian lifestyle destination in the world.” It will feature the Tryon International Equestrian Center, currently in operation. When fully completed, the facility will feature up to 10 riding arenas, including the recently completed stadium with seating for 6,000, as well as 1,000 permanent stalls, a Tryon Sports Complex, and a hotel overlooking the equestrian center.

Madelon Wallace, co-owner of Walker, Wallace & Emerson Realty and a Foothills area resident for over 45 years, is dedicated to preserving the open space that has made the area so attractive to equestrians and others. She came from Ohio to attend nearby Converse College, and after graduation accepted a job galloping race horses and breaking yearlings for Tony Wallace at Fairview Farms in Landrum, SC. She married Tony in 1975, and together they broke and gave early training to such nationally known stakes horses as Eclipse Award winners Chris Evert and Turkoman. In 1995, Madelon embarked on a new phase of her career as a full time Realtor and a co-owner with Trux Emerson of Walker, Wallace & Emerson Realty in Landrum. Her love of the area inspired her to work with the market to protect and conserve land from the sprawling housing developments that were looming. Madelon says she has seen “too many communities like ours swept away by the urban sprawl that follows in the wake of un-planned development. I have made it my mission to protect and conserve the land and the community that I love.” In 2005, Madelon was honored with the Conservation Steward of the Year Award from Upstate Forever in Greenville, SC, partially for her work conserving Fairview Farms, as a premiere, large tract residential equestrian community now known as Greenspace of Fairview, with 1,331 acres of protected land including 14 farm tracts, 2 agricultural tracts and 778 acres of open space protected in perpetuity from further development and owned by the Greenspace of Fairview tract owners.
