MEET ALEX “BUZZ” MACWILLIAM III, CO-OWNER and PRESIDENT of ALEX MACWILLIAM REAL ESTATE, VERO BEACH, FL

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR ALEX MACWILLIAM REAL ESTATE AND WERE THERE ANY STRUGGLES OR OBSTACLES YOU HAD TO INITIALLY OVERCOME?

Since 1949, Alex MacWilliam Real Estate has been serving the needs of Vero Beach and Indian River County, Florida. We are a diversified real estate brokerage with over 70 sales associates. Throughout our more than 71 years of doing business, we have weathered many nationwide and local crises and economic ups and downs and have always landed on our feet and took those learning experiences and turned them into better opportunities for our clients, our agents and our business.  One of my philosophies is that we do not have to be the biggest company with the highest market share, but we do want to be known as #1 in customer service and care.

WHO ARE YOUR MENTORS IN YOUR BUSINESS CAREER?

That is an easy one. My father Alex MacWilliam Jr. I graduated college in 1980 thinking that I would become a lawyer. Before I enrolled in law school, my father asked me if I would be interested in joining him in his real estate business. I took just 24 hours to say yes. I had the pleasure of working side by side with my father, 5 days a week for 33 years and we never had a disagreement. That is an experience most fathers and sons never have. The first thing my father taught me about business was the importance of your reputation. He said you must deal with honesty, integrity, and fairness to all. You cannot place your personal interest above your client’s or sales team. Now with MY son, Alex MacWilliam, IV, co-owner and Vice President, and a savvy, professional management team and staff, we operate the business utilizing those same core values.

HOW HAS TECHNOLOGY CHANGED AND IMPACTED YOUR APPROACH TO BUSINESS?

My father’s days of multiple listing books, driving around town to pick up keys and writing sales contracts on the hood of your car are long gone.  Now, changes in digital tools and technology have revolutionized our business and made it much easier for clients to “shop” for property with 93% of buyers using the internet as their primary source to search for a home and 80% utilizing a REALTOR along with the internet*.   To that note, we have implemented and continue to update and introduce the necessary Tools and Technology (TNT) to succeed in today’s business environment.  Tools such as…

  • Partnering with multiple local and global digital marketing platforms like Realtor.com, Zillow (we are a Best of Zillow Premier Agent), KV Core, LuxuryRealEstate.com, Leverage Global Partners, and ListHub with over 154 Participating Publishers reaching homebuyers on more than 750 websites and 55 countries.
  • Utilizing the best high definition professional photography and video services for digital and print marketing and advertising.
  • Posting and promoting properties via Social Media Marketing on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
  • Providing our clients the ability to safely, securely, quickly and efficiently conduct paperless digital real estate transactions.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE AREA YOU LIVE AND WORK IN?

I tell people that I was fortunate enough to have been born in Vero Beach, FL and raised in a prominent local real estate family who created the company I am now president of.  Both my parents were born in Vero Beach and my Grandfather, Alex Sr. served as city Mayor of Vero Beach for 24 years. We have deep family roots here and have always been involved in various charitable endeavors throughout the community with our time, talents, and funding.  It is nice, too, that Vero Beach is ideally located, on the Atlantic Ocean about 139 miles north of Miami and 90 minutes southeast of Orlando. Having travelled all over the continental United States, Hawaii, Central America, the Caribbean and Europe, every time I return home and drive over the bridge that connects our mainland to the barrier island where I live and work, I say to myself “There’s no place like home”.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR OUTSIDE INTERESTS?

Living the quintessential Florida lifestyle, I enjoy golf, surfing, saltwater hunting, fishing, and sitting on the beach. When I am not outdoors, I enjoy reading and cooking. My family are big college and huge SEC football fans and attend several games a year. I am a Florida Gator Alumni, my wife graduated from Ohio State, my son from Ole Miss and my daughter from the University of Alabama.  We do not always care who wins, so long as we are tailgating.

HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR COLLEAGUES WOULD DESCRIBE YOU?

I am known as a peacemaker. I am very approachable, and my door is always open. Many of our local competing brokers call me to discuss issues and ask for advice, even though my company may not be involved in the matter. One of my colleagues said she gave up trying to recruit my agents, because they are always happy and never want to move. That is because of my father’s lesson: treat everyone with honesty, integrity, and respect. I treat everyone equally.
