HM Properties Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary

HM Properties, a full-service residential real estate brokerage serving the Charlotte, North Carolina region including upstate South Carolina, celebrated its 10 year anniversary on August 20, 2016.

Reaching this milestone is particularly special to Valerie Mitchener, owner of HM Properties, the agents and staff because of the extraordinary obstacles they overcame during the company’s early years.

Over the past decade, HM Properties has built a reputation as an industry leader and has some of the most high performing brokers in the region. The company recently surpassed 70 brokers and has closed over $350 million year-to-date which is a very different place from where they were when they opened their doors in August 2006, with six agents and two staff.

Right away HM Properties’ brand set them apart from competition and the company quickly took off and more agents and staff came aboard. Within a few months, they moved into a 5,500 sq. ft. office in SouthPark’s Piedmont Town Center; a space that dwarfed the company, but Mitchener knew it would accommodate future growth. It would be a few years before they outgrew this space and added on.

Though the Charlotte real estate market was at a peak when HM Properties opened, it was just six months later when the market began to crash. While all industries were affected, the crash hit the real estate industry and homeowners particularly hard.

Building the business wasn’t easy during those first few years and was made even more challenging during a time when many real estate companies were forced to close, downsize or merge. Despite the obstacles, HM Properties grew to over 50 brokers and seven staff by the end of 2009, and in 2011, the company was honored as one of The Charlotte Business Journal’s “Fast 50” fastest-growing, mid-sized private companies in the Charlotte region. In addition, they won The Charlotte Business Journal’s “Best Places to Work” Award for mid-sized companies in 2009, and have been the Official Realtor® of the Charlotte Hornets since 2010. In early 2014, a newly formed international network of exclusive independent real estate firms company called Leverage Global Partners asked Mitchener to become part of its network and she accepted.

Looking back to that time, Mitchener said, “We could have given up, but we banded together and kept moving forward. Quitting was never an option. I am very grateful to our agents, employees, corporate partners, and clients for the successes that HM Properties has achieved over the past 10 years.”

In December 2014, Mitchener purchased a stand-alone building located one mile down the street at 6857 Fairview Road which is across from Phillips Place. After closing on the property in January 2015, she began a complete renovation of the interior and exterior façade of this 6,850 sq. ft. building and, at the end of September 2015, they moved in. After the move, the company paved its way to the future by refreshing its brand with a modern look to go along with the new building that included a new logo, marketing collateral and a new website will be launched soon. HM Properties looks forward to the future and will continue to provide unparalleled service to its clients.
